Net Metering of Electricity - Nevada

Net metering was established in Nevada on July 1, 1997. The law has been amended several times and as of August 2005, it provides for net metering for customer-generators using wind or solar energy systems of less than 150 kW. Nevada does NOT require utilities to compensate customer-generators for net excess generation (NEG). Excess electricity generation can be carried forward indefinitely on the customer's bill to offset electricity use. NEG can be counted by the utility toward renewable energy portfolio standard requirements.

There are different rules for systems above 30 kW and systems sized larger than 30 kW will not have as attractive terms economically speaking. Utilities must offer net metering for eligible systems until the cumulative capacity of all such net metering systems is equal to 1 percent of the utility’s peak capacity.
