Stacy Mitchell Discusses the Decline of Shopping Malls

in

Michael Krasny's Forum program on NPR featured our very own Stacy Mitchell in a panel discussion titled: The Decline of Shopping Malls.  From the page:

Sacramento's long-troubled Downtown Plaza is reeling from the recession, mirroring the decline of shopping malls across the country. As part of our "Facing Hard Times" series, we look at what dead or struggling shopping centers mean for local economies -- and for America's mall culture.

Guests:

  • Helene Klodawsky, producer of the film "Malls R Us," a new documentary on the popular culture, architecture, politics and economics of malls
  • Mary Lynne Vellinga, business editor for the Sacramento Bee
  • Stacy Mitchell, senior researcher at the New Rules Project and author of "Big-Box Swindle: The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the Fight for America's Independent Businesses"
  • William Coyle, managing director of the Sacramento and Roseville offices of Colliers International, a full service commercial retail firm

The New Rules Project exists to encourage policies that will increase the political and economic power of citizens and communities. Newrules.org will only approve comments that are relevant and, in our judgment, add a valuable contribution to the topic. We may edit comments to bring out key points. Abusive comments will not be tolerated.

Two widely different perspectives in this discussion

The paradigm of shopping local and dense urban communities versus that of the ever evolving retail venues and 'bargain shopping' are stark.

The ultimate arbiter of this debate will be us. Hopefully we will not decide that our identity is the "consumer" and that the mall (and shopping) is the place that we deem to be the center of our lives.

Keep up the fight.
