Store Size Cap – Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach, Florida
In 2006, responding to a proposed Wal-Mart supercenter, the City Council in Neptune Beach, Florida, adopted a size cap ordinance that limits stores to no more than 60,000 square feet. The primary goal of the measure, according to the City Council, is to ensure that retail stores in Neptune Beach are scaled to serve the community, not the larger region.
Concerned that it too could face big-box development pressure, the neighboring town of Atlantic Beach enacted its own 60,000-square-foot store size cap ordinance in December 2006.
